- MODIFIED BITUMEN
- EPDM
- TPO
Modified Bitumen was developed in Europe during the 1960s, and it is a rendition of the old built-up roofing (BUR) system. Modified Bitumen flat roofing is a single-ply system made of asphalt bitumen, modified with polymers, and reinforced with fiberglass and/or polyester. It is assembled in a unique permutation of layers that compound to increase the roof's effectiveness. It's this permutation of materials that gives Modified Bitumen competitive advantages that few other roofing systems can match.
EPDM is an extremely durable synthetic rubber roofing membrane (ethylene propylene diene terpolymer) widely used in low-slope buildings in Canada and worldwide. It has two primary ingredients, ethylene and propylene, are derived from oil and natural gas. EPDM is available in both black and white, and is sold in a broad variety of widths, ranging from 7.5 feet to fifty feet, and in two thicknesses, 45 and 60 mils. EPDM can be installed either fully adhered, mechanically attached or ballasted, with the seams of the roofing system sealed with liquid adhesives or specially formulated tape.
TPO stands for thermoplastic polyolefin, a single-ply roofing membrane that covers the surface of the roof. TPO was designed to combine the benefits of PVC and EPDM, and to offer a more environmentally-conscious flat roof option.
